The Difference between SAY, TALK, TELL and SPEAK in English
Say is used when we focus on the words someone says. It is usually followed by the message. For example: She said she was tired. We do not normally use a person مباشرة after say unless we use to: She said to me that she was tired.
Tell is used when we mention the listener. It is usually followed by a person and then the information. For example: She told me the truth. Unlike say, tell normally needs an object person, such as me, him, or us.
Talk means to have a conversation or discuss something. It is more interactive. For example: We talked about school for an hour. It is often used with to or with: I talked to my friend or I talked with my teacher.
Speak is more formal than talk and is often used for languages or formal situations. For example: She speaks English very well. We also say: The manager will speak to the staff tomorrow.
In summary, say focuses on words, tell focuses on giving information to someone, talk focuses on conversation, and speak is often more formal or related to language.
